Why Is My Dog Knuckling Over on a Front Paw?

A dog that knuckles over on a front paw may briefly place the top of the toes on the floor, scrape the nails, or take longer than usual to return the paw to a normal position after a step. Owners often describe the paw as “turning under,” “giving way,” or remaining curled. Although a single episode can follow a slip, repeated knuckling should not be dismissed as simple clumsiness. Normal weight-bearing depends on bones, joints, and muscles working together with peripheral nerves, the spinal cord, and the brain.

When a dog does not quickly recognize that the paw has folded under, proprioceptive function may be impaired. Proprioception is the nervous system’s ability to sense the position of each limb without relying on vision. Receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints send information through the nerves to the spinal cord and brain, and a motor response then corrects the paw’s position. A problem anywhere along this pathway can delay that correction. This finding helps a veterinarian localize a lesion, but it does not identify a specific disease by itself.

Disorders affecting the cervical spine are important possibilities when one or both front limbs buckle. Intervertebral disc disease, spinal cord compression, inflammation, and vertebral instability can disrupt nerve signal transmission. Depending on the location and severity, a dog may also show neck pain, a lowered head, stiffness, short steps, weakness in all four limbs, or difficulty rising. Some cervical lesions produce more obvious signs in the front limbs, while others affect the hind limbs first.

Injuries to the nerves that run through the limb are also considered. The radial nerve, for example, contributes to extension of the elbow, carpus, and toes. Trauma, stretching, prolonged compression, or a mass can cause an abnormal posture, reduced sensation, and difficulty bearing weight. Brachial plexus disorders may affect several nerves at once. The distribution of weakness, along with reflex and sensory findings, helps distinguish a peripheral nerve lesion from a problem within the spinal cord.

Not every folded paw has a neurological cause. Severe pain in the carpus, toes, shoulder, or elbow may make a dog unload the limb quickly and create an unusual stance. Broken nails, wounds, foreign material, and tendon injuries can also change the gait. Watching a dog stumble or scrape the nails therefore cannot replace an examination: orthopedic and neurological disorders may look very similar at home.

At the appointment, assessment begins by watching the dog walk in a straight line, turn, and move at different speeds. The veterinarian compares strength, muscle tone, reflexes, and postural reactions and examines the spine and joints. Radiographs may reveal fractures, osteoarthritis, or vertebral changes, but they do not adequately show the spinal cord or many soft tissues. Depending on the suspected location, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, laboratory tests, or electrodiagnostic testing may be needed.

Recording the episode can be very helpful, especially when it is intermittent. Ideally, film the dog walking from the front, side, and rear without repeatedly provoking the paw to fold. While waiting for care, reduce jumping, stairs, and running, keep the dog on non-slip flooring, and protect the skin if the nails are scraping. Tight bandages or improvised boots can impair circulation and should not be used without veterinary guidance.

Seek urgent care if the problem appeared suddenly, is worsening, involves more than one limb, or is accompanied by severe pain, falls, inability to stand, loss of sensation, or difficulty urinating. Even if the dog can still walk, repeated weight-bearing on the top of the paw can cause wounds and may indicate progressive neurological dysfunction. Early investigation helps locate the problem and select proportionate care, avoiding both dangerous delays and unnecessary treatment.
