How often should I bathe my dog?

Updated: Aug 26

Bathing your dog might seem like a simple routine task, but knowing exactly how often to do it can be surprisingly confusing. Some pet owners bathe their dogs weekly, while others may go months without giving their furry companion a proper wash.

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer — the ideal frequency depends on several factors, including your dog’s breed, coat type, lifestyle, skin condition, and even seasonal changes.

For example, dogs with oily coats, such as Basset Hounds, tend to emit a stronger odor and may need bathing more frequently — sometimes once a week. On the other hand, breeds with water-repellent coats, like Golden Retrievers or Labrador Retrievers, benefit from less frequent washing to preserve the natural oils that protect their fur. Similarly, short-haired breeds or dogs with sensitive skin may only need a bath every few months to avoid irritation or dryness.

A dog’s lifestyle also plays a major role. If your dog loves playing in the mud, swimming in lakes, or rolling around in questionable places, more frequent baths are necessary to keep their coat and skin clean and healthy. Urban dogs that walk on polluted sidewalks or are frequently exposed to dust and allergens may also need more regular cleaning. However, overbathing can strip the natural oils from a dog’s skin, leading to dryness, flakiness, and potential skin issues. That’s why it’s important to strike the right balance.

Veterinarians generally recommend bathing your dog about once every four to six weeks — but this is a rough guideline. It’s also essential to use a shampoo formulated specifically for dogs, as their skin pH is different from that of humans. Using human products can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to problems. For dogs with skin conditions, such as allergies or infections, medicated shampoos prescribed by a vet may be required, and the bathing frequency could be increased or adjusted according to medical needs.

Ultimately, the best approach is to observe your dog. If their coat is dirty, smells bad, or feels greasy, it’s probably time for a bath. On the other hand, if their skin looks dry or they’re scratching more than usual, you might be bathing too often. Consulting your veterinarian or a professional groomer can help determine the best schedule based on your dog’s specific needs.

Keeping your dog clean is not just about hygiene — it also contributes to their comfort and overall well-being. So whether it's monthly, bimonthly, or just as needed, a well-timed bath is an important part of caring for your furry friend.
